Modeling sardine and anchovy low-frequency variability.
The group of small pelagics (sardines, anchovies, herrings, etc.) is the largest source of wild marine protein worldwide, providing annually between 21% and 43% of the total marine capture production during at least the last 60 y (1). Even when large-scale fisheries have been operating for decades to centuries, their assessment and management remains difficult and highly uncertain (2). Such cha...

Airborne lidar is being considered as a tool for fish detection and for fisheries surveys. Detection has been demonstrated, and an imaging lidar has been developed to detect and identify fish for commercial fisheries. For survey work, a simpler radiometric lidar is being investigated, and preliminary results suggest that such a lidar can be very useful for biomass estimation.
متن کاملEssential fish habitats (EFH) of small pelagic fishes in the north of the Persian Gulf and Oman Sea, Iran
Small pelagic fishes particularly anchovy (Encrasicholina punctifer) and sardine (Sardinella sindensis) have an important role to support the Iranian fisheries, and are distributed along the entire length of the Persian Gulf and Oman Sea coastal waters. Using small pelagic fisheries logbook, a GIS-based environmental modelling approach was applied to investigate the presence and abundance of an...

Since the days of Elton, population cycles have challenged ecologists and resource managers. Although the underlying mechanisms remain debated, theory holds that both density-dependent and density-independent processes shape the dynamics. One striking example is the large-scale fluctuations of sardine and anchovy observed across the major upwelling areas of the world. Despite a long history of ...
